Last week the City of London Police launched a unit of 19 staff, dedicated to pursuing serious intellectual property crime.

The Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (Pipcu) will receive £2.56m funding over the next two years from the UK government body the Intellectual Property Office. Det Ch Supt Oliver Shaw said: ‘Our focus will be the professional criminals using intellectual property crime to generate illicit gains.’

News of the launch of this unit comes after Prime Minister David Cameron’s appointment of an intellectual property adviser to counter serious copyright crime.
