An exciting opportunity has arisen in our Advanced Engineering Group. We are looking for a forward thinking, self-motivated individual who can work independently as well as working within a team. A background in mechanical engineering is essential for this role, along with 2-3 years’ experience of working with UK, European and US clients. Roles are available in both our Sheffield and Leamington Spa offices.

•Able to express ideas clearly and accurately in writing; precisely defining the scope of protection for an invention.
•Proven ability in an engineering field – to deal on equal terms with the research and development teams of our clients.

•Ability to communicate effectively with staff and clients at all levels, recognising the need to be discreet in many circumstances, in particular when dealing with commercially sensitive information not in the public domain.
•A team-player, with a proactive approach.
•The ability to prioritise work and manage time effectively.
•The ability to multi-task and forward plan.
•Able to build rapport with our existing clients and utilise own professional network to find potential new clients.
•Experience of how IP works in the US; with knowledge of other countries legislation a distinct advantage.
•A good first degree in an engineering is desirable.
•Passed all foundation exams or equivalent qualification (QMW, Bournemouth, etc.)Team oriented, be prepared to take responsibility, proactive with clients and enjoy working with overseas attorneys
(particularly in the US).
•Demonstrable drafting experience; claims and responses to office actions for prosecution in Europe.
•Experience of filing patent applications in mechanical engineering field.
•Corresponding with clients, Patent Offices and overseas Attorneys.
•Researching prior art and devising creative and persuasive arguments against any objections to applications from patent offices.
•Thoroughly analysing and editing existing patent specifications to overcome objections to patent applications.
•Drafting specifications for complex inventions.
•Drafting simple specifications for simple inventions without significant supervision.
•Meeting with clients, more commonly industrial companies than individual inventors. Advising clients at meetings.
•Preparing oppositions for filing at the European Patent Office.
•Attending hearings at the European Patent Office.
•Researching and advising on the status, scope and validity of third party intellectual property rights.
•Giving direction and sharing knowledge with operations staff.
•Building a network of contacts, with a view to converting contacts to clients.
