Why did you choose this job profession?
I’ve always been drawn to the cutting edge of technology, whether that was exploring advanced AI methods during my Master’s in Machine Learning, or co-founding a healthtech start-up that used MRI data to predict Alzheimer’s risk. Despite my love for research, I wasn’t entirely sure that a pure academic path was right for me. I wanted a role that kept me at the forefront of innovation, but from a perspective that involves protecting and defining technological advancements rather than building them directly.
What attracted you to your role?
That’s what led me to Appleyard Lees IP LLP as a Trainee Patent Attorney. Here, I can apply both my background in Electrical Engineering and Machine Learning to assess and secure new ideas. Rather than working on a single project at a time, I’m exposed to a wide range of inventions, each presenting fresh challenges.
Being part of a firm that values mentorship is a huge plus. From day one, I’ve been entrusted with real client cases and guided by experienced Partners who encourage me to push my problem-solving skills at every step. It’s an environment that rewards curiosity, attention to detail, and strong communication—traits.
Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to enter the profession?
If you’re coming from a science or engineering background and want to explore a career in patent law, don’t be put off by the legal aspect. With the right firm, you’ll learn on the job and build on your technical foundations in a whole new way. For me, this path means continuing to work on cutting-edge innovation while helping innovators secure the rights to the breakthroughs that move the world forward.
