An exciting opportunity has arisen in our Cambridge office for a newly qualified Patent Attorney with a background in Chemistry.  Ideally, you will have 1 – 3 years (PQE) in private practice or perhaps be looking to move to private practice after a period in-house. The role will involve direct client work in a range of technical areas relating to chemistry, training more junior colleagues, building a network with some of Cambridge’s most exciting chemical companies and a highly supportive working environment.  The role is aimed at advancing and expanding our chemical practice in the Cambridge area.

Key Responsibilities

You will be involved in all aspects of patent attorney work including meetings with clients, drafting applications, UK and EPO prosecution and IP advice such as FTO and due diligence work.  Our chemistry team also handles a lot of EPO opposition work.

You will need to feel comfortable going to networking events to promote our services. Internally, you will need to be a collaborative individual who enjoys working as part of the Appleyard Lees team. There is considerable opportunity to expand several areas of our pharmaceutical and chemical practice – polymers, catalysis, battery technology, industrial processing, materials, coatings and novel compounds and compositions for industrial and healthcare applications – and experience in these areas would be advantageous.

At Appleyard Lees, we support you to develop into the best attorney you can be and to take the next steps in your career.  In particular, we aim to provide the right level of support for the transition from trainee to senior attorney.  For us, your development training does not stop when you have passed the professional exams. We offer training and continued professional development at all levels of your career and this includes bespoke in-house training and development programmes for qualified attorneys.

Providing people with a mentor is a critical part of enabling development and knowing if individuals are ‘on track’ in terms of their career path and progression, it also helps with improving knowledge and skills.

Aside from this, we will fund all of your training including memberships, exams, courses and conferences. We also encourage our technical teams to write articles for our Greenshoots platform and take part in podcasts.
