Are you looking for a career with a difference?
HGF is a leading intellectual property firm in Europe and due to successful growth we now have an opportunity for a life sciences graduate to join us as a Trainee in our Life Sciences team in York.
If this is for you, then you are looking at getting into one of the smaller, expert professions, by working and training up over a period of about 4 – 5 years to become a dual qualified Chartered UK Patent Attorney and a European Patent Attorney. You’ll need top-drawer academics and a high level of care and attention to detail. You’ll be someone who can still quickly see the wood from the trees, despite your interest and focus on the detailed stuff. You’ll also need to be a bit of an all-rounder; happy and interested to apply your intellect to whatever business-related challenges crop up. You may also share our view that soft skills are hugely important.
The Vacancy
The opportunity is in our York office, assisting a team of experienced attorneys. The role is demanding of intellect and effort and will require consistent application and some significant commitment for self-study out of office hours. By way of example, the role involves reading of documents, such as research papers and patent specifications, and then briefing others as to their technical content and being able to respond to technical questions. Technical writing is a large element of what will be needed as we have much original drafting work to get through. HGF provides a mentor and full support for those training for professional exams.

The Patent Attorney Role
Patent Attorneys provide technical solutions and write complex patent documents which legally protect their client’s highly valuable inventions; this requires an in-depth understanding of their technical specialism, and an equally deep knowledge of the relevant legislation and regulatory requirements which vary according to the country of registration.
Salary Package
Competitive salary, increasing significantly with qualification, plus bonus and excellent benefits, including pension, private healthcare and 25 days holiday.
More specifically…
The person we are looking for needs to:
- have a 1st class or upper second degree from a top global university
- have excellent written and oral communication skills in the English language
- be socially confident and flexible in attitude and approach
- be able to operate in an intellectually demanding and sometimes pressured environment
- be a team player
